Infarct, Small Intestine
Infarction of small intestine

•This is a segment of small intestine (ileum)
•Approximately 3/4 of the specimen shows transmural hemorrhage and infarction (the dark red region). The attached mesentery is also hemorrhagic.
•This is the result of twisting of this loop of bowel about its mesentery (volvulus), thus impeding arterial flow and venous return.
•Note the junction of the more normal appearing tan-pink bowel with the hemorrhagic bowel.
