• External view of a parathyroid adenoma.
• Smooth surface is typical of a benign neoplasm.
• Cannot separate hyperplasia from adenoma on the basis of gross findings in one gland.
• Parathyroid carcinoma would probably show adhesions reflecting difficulty in dissecting it from adjacent
invaded structures.
