•The specimen is a bisected head of a femur.
•Note, the triangular area demarcated by the black arrows.
•Note as well, that the articular cartilage overlying this section of bone, has lifted off.
•The triangular area is an area of avascular necrosis of bone.
•The change in the articular cartilage is secondary to the bone lesion.
