Acute Pyelonephritis

•The photograph shows right and left kidneys of a 2 year old child born with multiple anomalies including hydrocephalus.
•The kidneys show patchy lighter colored areas (arrows) when compared to the normal darker colored areas.
•Microscopically, the lighter areas showed acute suppurative inflammation including demonstrable bacteria.
•The pyelonephritis in this case was probably hematogenous. The patient also had bacterial meningitis and pneumonia.
