General Gross Description:

Normal vertebral bones appear ivory white on uncut surface.
On cut surface, there is a rim of hard, white "cortical" bone.
This surrounds a red colored zone, with white flecks.
The red color is due to marrow; the white flecks are cancellous bone within.
General Microscopic Description:

Histological sections of cancellous bone reveal spicules of bone interspersed among marrow spaces.
