| Pathogenesis: • Unlike other forms of Hodgkin's disease relatively large population of neoplastic cells • Marked inflammatory reaction driven by cytokines secreted by neoplastic cells including IL 5 (attracting eosinophils), IL4, tumor necrosis factor alpha, GM-CSF |
| Epidemiology: • 0.7% of all new cancers in the U.S. are Hodgkin's Disease • Present in older population • Relatively rare |
| General Gross Description: • Small, firm lymph nodes |
| General Microscopic Description: • Large numbers of diagnostic Reed Sternberg cells and mononuclear variants which are CD15+, CD30+, CD45-, CD20- • Background shows scant lymphocytes and may show abundant reticulin deposition or fibrosis |
| Clinical Correlations: • Usually involves multiple lymph node groups • Least likely to respond well to treatment |
