Acute Myocardial Infarct
Acute Myocardial Infarct

View of superior surfaces of transverse sections of the heart, with the anterior surfaces facing to the left.
These sections were bathed in a tetrazolium reagent solution. This is a gross marker of succinic dehydrogenase, which stains bright red, and is lost within 1/2 hour of the clinical onset of myocardial necrosis. Dead myocardium remains unstained as seen in these sections. It takes at least 12 hours of survival for an acute infarct to be seen grossly and microscopically, a limitation in diagnosis eliminated by this technique.
