The photograph shown here is of an anencephalic infant who lacks cerebral hemispheres and cerebellum and may have only a rudimentary brainstem
This anomaly occurs because the anterior neural tube does not close properly for mostly unknown reasons. It occurs in approximates 1:1000 births and has a poor prognosis, with infants living only a few hours or days.
