Serous Cystadenoma

Etiology: • unknown

Pathogenesis: • derives from germinal (surface) epithelium • ?epithelium pinched off into ovarian stroma following rupture of follicle • may undergo metaplasia and secretion

Epidemiology: • reproductive age women

General Gross Description: • smooth external surface • unilocular cyst or one with few septae • contains clear, colorless, thin fluid • smooth, thin lining +/- small papillae

General Microscopic Description: • pseudostratified epithelium with ciliated and secretory cells • histologically indistinguishable from TUBAL epithelium • bland stroma

Clinical Correlations: • reproductive age women • "adnexal" mass • symptoms of heaviness or pressure if large • cured with surgical cystectomy • 20% bilateral
