Pathogenesis

result of monozygotic twinning with separation after the development of pole,
Epidemiology

monygotic twinning relatively steady in all populations at 3.5/1000.
General Gross Description

chorionic surface with insertion of two umbilical cords
no dividing membrane
single amniotic sac
superficial anastamoses may be evident between circulations
General Microscopic Description

unable to discriminate between villi of twins
no dividing membrane
Clinical Correlation

course may be complicated near term by knotting of umbilical cords which may result in fetal demise
