Etiology
• Unknown
|
Pathogenesis
• Rupture of membranes with or without ongoing leakage results in smaller amnion sac than width of the placental disk,
|
Epidemiology
• Associated with amnion rupture and extramembranous pregnancy
• May also be associated with maternal smoking
|
General Gross Description
• Membranes insert central to the edge of the placental disk
• The edge of the chorionic plate is not the edge of the placental disk
• The surface of the placental disk consists of necrotic decidua
|
General Microscopic Description
• Section reveals old hemorrhage and necrotic decidua beneath the folded membranes
|
Clinical Correlation
• May be associated with positional deformities of the fetus and hypoplasia of the lungs if outside the amnionic sac
|
