Circumvallate Placentation
Etiology

Unknown
Pathogenesis

Rupture of membranes with or without ongoing leakage results in smaller amnion sac than width of the placental disk,
Epidemiology

Associated with amnion rupture and extramembranous pregnancy
May also be associated with maternal smoking
General Gross Description

Membranes insert central to the edge of the placental disk
The edge of the chorionic plate is not the edge of the placental disk
The surface of the placental disk consists of necrotic decidua
General Microscopic Description

Section reveals old hemorrhage and necrotic decidua beneath the folded membranes
Clinical Correlation

May be associated with positional deformities of the fetus and hypoplasia of the lungs if outside the amnionic sac
