| The villi exhibit a covering of a double layer of syncytiotrophoblast (on the outside) and cytotrophoblast (on the inside) identified by the blue arrow.
The black arrow points to vessels containing almost exclusively nucleated red blood cells.
The vessels occupy only a small part of the cross section of the villus.
