Endometrial Polyp (Medium Power)

The endometrial glands vary in size with several being cystic.
Two gland lumens contain inspissated secretions admixed with a few epithelial cells.
The stroma is fibrous and relatively eosinophilic.

Etiology

unknown, some association with tamoxifen a systemic anti-estrogen with mixed effects on the uterus
may be associated with increased unopposed estrogen
Pathogenesis

unknown
? local hyperresponsiveness to estrogen with failure to respond to progesterone,
Epidemiology

perimenopausal women
General Gross Description

sessile or pedunculated soft tan masses
0.5 cm to 3.0 cm in diameter, usually
may protrude through cervical os
General Microscopic Description

glands varying from proliferative to hyperplastic mixed with glands showing cystic dilatation with secretion
dense fibrous stroma
collarette of blood vessels with fibrotic walls
occasionally glands may be atrophic
Clinical Correlation

irregular menses or asymptomatic
treatment with removal is generally curative
