Mucinous Cystadenoma (20X)

The nuclei are basal, dark and inactive.
The abundant cytoplasm is vacuolated and secreted mucin is adherent to the apical surface of the cells.
These cells resemble goblet cells of the bowel.

unknown
Pathogenesis

derives from germinal (surface) epithelium
?epithelium pinched off into ovarian stroma following rupture of follicle
may undergo metaplasia and secretion,
Epidemiology

reproductive age women
General Gross Description

may achieve enormous size
smooth external surface
unilocular cyst or one with few septae
contains clear, yellow, slimy fluid
smooth, thin lining
General Microscopic Description

columnar epithelium with mucin containing cells
usually identical to endocervical or intestinal epithelium
bland stroma
Clinical Correlation

reproductive age women
adnexal mass
symptoms of heaviness or pressure if large
cured with surgical cystectomy
5% bilateral
