The epidermis is maturing normally.
The basal epithelium contains several large cells with abundant pale cytoplasm.
The nuclei of these cells are round with identifiable nucleoli.

Rare
Predominantly post-menopausal women
May be associated with underlying adenocarcinoma (<15%)
General Gross Description

Red, crusting, itchy lesion
General Microscopic Description

Malignant cells individually infiltrate the squamous mucosa or in small nests
Nuclei have large nucleolus and are hyperchromatic
Cytoplasm contains mucin
Clinical Correlation

Treatment is usually surgical with an effort to clear the margins
