The villus has numerous protrusions and infoldings.
The green arrow points to an infolding which has been surrounded by stroma.
This is a trophoblast inclusion.
Another inclusion is visible above and slightly to the right.

Etiology

Unknown.
Pathogenesis

Due to cross sections of deeply infolded villous contours,
Epidemiology

Increased in triploid gestations, particularly partial moles.
May also be increased in aneuploid gestations with other chromsome counts

Microscopic finding
General Microscopic Description

Intravillus finding composed of syncytio- and/or cytotrophoblast
Maternal blood may be contained within the inclusion
Clinical Correlation

Outcome dependent on underlying pathology
