Normal Ureter

This is a cross section of a ureter at medium power.
In the relaxed state, the lumen of the ureter (L) is stellate in shape.
The transitional epithelium shows approximately 5 layers of cells in this photomicrograph.
The surface of the epithelium consists of a layer of superficial cells sometimes referred to as umbrella cells. These cells are larger and covers several underlying cells.
