Alzheimer Plaque
Alzheimer Plaque

The specimen is a microscopic section of cerebral cortex stained with the Bielschowski siver stain which stains axons but in this case also stains the rounded black region known as a senile plaque.
Senile plaques are seen almost exclsively in Alzheimer's disease but also seen in many older normal adults.
The number of plaques per low power field along with the number of associated neurofibrillary tangles is used to make the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.
This plaque has an amyloid center.
