Alzheimer's disease is characterized grossly by widening of the sulci and narrowing of the gyri (atrophy) of cerebral cortices and enlarged ventricles as shown in this photo.
It is probably the most common dementing illness in the elderly.
The older the individual, the more likely he will show signs of dementia.
Microscopically, Alzheimer's disease is characterized by senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles which must be seen on Bielschowski stained slides.
