High power of subacute infarct showing numerous foamy macrophages (gitter cells) picking up dead tissue.
The macrophages are characterized by rounded vacuolated cytoplasm and small dark eccentric nuclei.
Macrophages in the CNS come from CNS microglia and monocytes from the blood.
