| Normal Bone
| A high power (40x) image of normal bone.
The larger "holes" are the Haversian Canals.
These are normally occupied by the blood vessels that
supply blood with nutrients.
The small holes are the lacunae that house the
osteocytes.
In some of the lacunae, you can see the dark dots that
represent the stained nuclei of the osteocytes.
The green arrow points to the cement lines that lie between
successive depositions of bone formation by the
osteocytes.
Notice that the cement lines are smooth and form
graceful curves that run through the substance of the
bone in this image.
